Beware of HMRC Copycat Scams |
||
|
Dear Residents. Beware of HMRC Copycat ScamsResidents are being urged to stay alert as approximately one million people across the UK may receive a letter from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) advising they could be entitled to a tax relief payment, typically around £70, although the amount may vary. While genuine letters are being sent out, scammers may try to take advantage of the situation by creating convincing "copycat" letters, emails, texts or phone calls. If you are eligible, HMRC will contact you automatically. You do not need to apply for the payment yourself. How to spot a genuine HMRC payment notification✅ If you are eligible, HMRC will contact you directly by letter or through your online Personal Tax Account. ✅ You may be asked to provide bank account details via your Personal Tax Account or by contacting HMRC directly. ❌ HMRC will not text, email or telephone you about this payment. Any unexpected messages or calls claiming to be from HMRC should be treated as a scam. ❌ HMRC will never ask you to transfer money, reveal your PIN, or provide passwords. Stay SafeIf you receive a letter and are unsure whether it is genuine, visit the GOV.UK page "Check if a letter you've received from HMRC is genuine" and look for information relating to the Low Earner's Pension Payment. If you are still unsure, contact HMRC directly on 0300 200 3300 before taking any action. Please share this advice with friends, family and neighbours, particularly those who may be less confident in recognising scams. A quick conversation could help prevent someone from becoming a victim of fraud. Thank you for your continued support.Chadderton Neighbourhood Policing Team
